The Ideal Length For Online Marketing Content

The internet is filled with thousands of different platforms that allow people from around the world to communicate, learn, and ultimately have a voice to share their message. Everyday these communities grow in size and complexity, making the lines on how to use these platforms for online marketing even more blurred.

Each one of these communities is different and each community has guidelines (sometimes written, sometimes not) about how a user should share their message. One of the biggest unrealized mistakes made in these online communities today is making a social post to long or too short.

It's critical to make your content the proper length when posting. Not only to retain the attention of your audience, but also to make it appear as if you know what you're doing (to put it bluntly). So, here are some guidelines to maintain the ideal length for your online content.

Read, and post like a pro! ––

Twitter
Keep it to 100 characters. Short, concise, and to the point will win every time without flaw. No one likes a wordy tweet. If you’ve got more to say, consider using a different platform and posting a link twitter with a short description.

Domain Name
Ahh, this is an important one. Your website is your homebase on the web. I promise you no one will remember "www.thatsuperlongname.com". Keep your domain name to 8 characters. If your company name is longer, get crafty.

Facebook
40 words is the magic number. A short post will get more reads and more likes (trust me, just give it a try). Agian, if you have more to say consider outside linking. There are some small exceptions to this rule so use your best judgment.

Blog Posts
1600 words. Bottom line: you can say a whole lot in 1600 words. This is a great place to put posts that are too long to fit on other platforms. Always remember to link your blog posts to your social networks and groups.

Email Subject Line
28-39 characters and focused on the subject and context is key in getting people to click on your email. Don’t be afraid to get crafty and test how people respond to your subject lines.

Title Tag
If you’re linking somewhere, keep the link title to under 55 characters. It’s just best practice.

Youtube
Ok, so this one has exceptions to the rule as well, but if you can keep your video under 3 minutes, complete watch rates will drastically increase. Again, use your best judgment here.

Podcast’s
An optimum length is 22 minutes. Lengths longer than this can scare people away.
