10 Tips for Building an Awesome LinkedIn Profile

BACK TO ARTICLES

We all want that perfect LinkedIn profile that reflects our accomplishments, our achievements and shows our best qualities. That’s pretty obvious, but what is not obvious is how to do that. Fortunately, we have you covered:

How to Build Awesome LinkedIn Profile

1. Communicate Who You Are: Employers care about your qualifications first and foremost, but they also want to know who they’re interested in. Don’t go over the top, but squeeze in something in your headline or summary that encompasses an aspect of who you are outside of the professional world.

2. Get Connected: Build authority and clout with your presence on LinkedIn. Aim to get that 500+ connection number (hint: get 501 connections).

3. Get a Great Photo: You will most commonly be advised to get a “professional” headshot. You should and it is a viable option, BUT don’t restrict you options to the same old generic photo you see all over LinkedIn. Liven it up (within reason) and push for something that is going to stick out from the mass of profiles.

4. Customize Your URL: Set up a customized URL that either sums up your skills/ expertise or your name. Whichever is available and works—claim it.

5. Join Industry Related Groups: Join groups and partake in discussions. The goal here is to connect and extend your network while furthering your awareness in the industry. Groups are also a great avenue to share your content.

6. Add Media: LinkedIn now allows you to add video, pictures and other forms of media. Tactfully place and use multimedia to liven up your page and stick out. Let me repeat this, do it tactfully (it is very easy to get carried away).

7. Include Call to Actions: Aim to capture people and direct them to something you want them to see when they are viewing your profile. Prompt them to email you to connect, use images as banners to direct attention or prompt discussions throughout your page. Simple translation: make your LinkedIn page actionable.

8. Endorse Your Peers: Endorsements may be given away like candy nowadays, but don’t ignore them. Endorse your peers and make them credible and with reason behind them. It’s up to you to endorse with integrity and keep the system working as it was designed.

9. Write in First Person: Your page is your profile and belongs to you, therefore, keep it in first person.

10. Treat Promotions as New Jobs: When you get a promotion or that internship turns into a job, create it as a new job on your profile. Your career’s progression is important and will be something employers will respect and will be happy to see.
